Our Science
LSPA Water Quality Buoy
The buoy is located in Lake Sunapee near Loon Island Lighthouse from May through early November annually. During the winter months, the buoy is tethered in Sunapee Harbor and continues to collect and transmit some data.
Water Quality Monitoring
LSPA has been collecting and recording water quality data from tributaries, lakes, and ponds within the Lake Sunapee Watershed since 1986, tracking short and long-term changes. Long-term data trends help guide LSPA in our efforts to inform and educate the public about the need to be good watershed stewards to maintain or improve our high-quality waters.
Ice in/Ice out Data
Ice Out data has been collected since 1869, and recently LSPA started collecting ice in data as well to keep track of regional climate changes.
Local Weather Data
LSPA has four weather stations on Lake Sunapee located in Sunapee Harbor, Georges Mills, Herrick Cove and south of the Fells.
Scientific Papers & Reports
Explore the incredible research connected to Lake Sunapee, including studies using LSPA’s long-term data, projects by our research partners, and scientific findings from students and collaborators that deepen understanding of lake ecosystems and watershed health.
Lake Sunapee’s Food Web
The food web is an essential part of the lake ecosystem. Understanding the complex connections between plants and animals helps us to understand the impacts and ramifications of any changes to this delicate, balanced system.
History of Science at LSPA
Since the early 2000s, researchers have focused their attention and resources on Lake Sunapee, so much so that the lake is now considered to be a famous site of lake science (limnological) research!
