How have local Indigenous groups historically and contemporarily used and valued local waterways? What impacts do dams have on ensuring Indigenous environmental justice? Join Paul and Denise Pouliot, head speakers of the Cowasuck Band of Pennacook Abenaki People and film consultants, for a discussion on Indigenous use of our local waterways, discussion of Abenaki place names, and screening of the short film “Swimming Upstream: Indigenous Environmental Justice for our Waterways.” Swimming Upstream introduces the plight of the river herring and explores the past, present, and future of the Great Bay Estuary of NH; which act as an example of the role of dams in Indigenous environmental justice.
