Black Mountain Bird Banding Station Field Program

  • Black Mountain Forest Sutton, NH 03260 USA (map)

Join LSPA staff and Lindsay Herlihy, biologist, naturalist-educator, and lead bander, for the opportunity to learn about and see firsthand the process of bird banding at the Black Mountain Banding Station (BMBS)  in North Sutton, NH. Lindsay established BMBS in 2024, and the station participates in the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity & Survivorship) program that collects data on local breeding birds.

This program begins at 6:30am to have the best chance of seeing more birds captured, banded, measured, and released. Lindsay will explain all of the data collected for each bird, and how MAPS data has helped scientists understand the health of bird populations across North America.

This is a field experience which includes a 5 minute walk (mild incline) on a grassy woods road in order to reach the banding station. Please bring water and wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. If you'd like to be able to sit while we wait for birds, bring along a camp or folding chair. Space is limited; register early. You will receive directions to the banding site in Sutton, NH by email before the event.  If we need to utilize the rain date, we will email everyone by mid-day on Friday July 31st. Rain date: Sunday, August 2nd
