Community Science Water Monitoring on Lake Sunapee

What is the project?

Interested volunteers have the opportunity to use a plankton net and portable microscope called a “Cyanoscope”, to get an up-close view of plankton living in the lake and learn to identify types of cyanobacteria, algae, and small aquatic animals that are crucial to the lake food web. We are especially interested in identifying and monitoring cyanobacteria in the lake, as they have the greatest potential to cause health risks to lake users. Participants will be helping the large-scale efforts of the Cyanobacterial Monitoring Collaborative (CMC), which works with citizen scientists, water professionals, and the general public to monitor and study cyanobacteria in water bodies nationwide.
