Scientists from Iowa State focused on Lake Sunapee during the week of July 21st. In spite of the nasty weather, over 120,000 points of depth measurements were recorded for Lake Sunapee. These will result in a contour description of the lake and aid scientists in understanding how the lake works, from water budgets and flows, to fish habitat.
John gave a talk on Thursday describing how knowledge of depth contours (bathymetry) is critical in the management of lakes. Sunapee's contours are much more complicated than many mid-west lakes. Bathymetry also indicates whether a lake is behaving as one lake or several basins.
Once the data is converted into usable form, it then will guide Lake Sunapee scientists in understanding such phenomena as algae behavior, water flows, and chemistry varations within the lake.
