The LSPA buoy continues to take Lake Sunapee’s temperature, as well as dissolved oxygen and a few other parameters. Below is a graph showing data from Mid-December through Mid-January. As you can see, all depth levels are approximately the same temperature, vastly different than in the summer, when the lake has distinctly different temperature levels. The bottom line shows the sensor closest to the surface.
This will be the first winter in which the lake’s temperature will be continuously monitored. Prior to the buoy, once or twice a winter, LSPA staff would go out onto the ice, drill holes, and take water samples and also take temperature readings. Rather than once or twice a winter, the buoy takes readings every 10 minutes, 24-7. The LSPA staff will again go out this winter for samples and for “field proofing”.
