Dominant Phytoplankton (Algae) in Lake Sunapee

(from phyto, meaning plant, and plankto, meaning drifting or floating)

Based on about 40 sample analyses done in 2007 and 2008,the following microscopic phytoplankton were the more dominant algae present:

•Diatoms- Asterionella, Cyclotella
•Golden brown algae- Chrysosphaerella, Dinobryon
•Green algae- Staurastrum, Quadrigula, Pandorina
