Cyanobacterial Blooms

There has been recent local media attention to cyanobacterial (blue green algae) blooms in New Hampshire lakes.
LSPA continues to recommend against drinking untreated surface water at any time.
Precautions
NH Department of Environmental Services advises that if you observe the green surface scum of a cyanobacteria bloom:
Do not drink the water!
Do not let pets drink it.
Do not wade or swim in the water where there is surface scum.
Although the US has not established any standards for levels of toxins in cyanobacteria, DES has a system for “posting” lakes or ponds when blooms are observed, advising against swimming.
If you see a surface scum on Lake Sunapee, please take a photo of it if you can, and report it to LSPA, 763-2210 or info@lakesunapee.org.
